Dr. Ostrager is a well-known expert who helps patients understand treatment options for Carpal Tunnel pain (We’ve written about her approach before on our blog: CLICK HERE).There are several tests performed at Midtown East Family Medicine PLLC that can be helpful in the diagnosis and treatment of hand and wrist pain.
If you are having symptoms that include numbness, pain or weakness in the fingers, hand and wrist, treatment options are fairly straightforward and effective.
An EMG/NCV (Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Velocity) is a nerve conduction study that will measure how electricity moves through the hand – specifically the nerve – and communicates with the proper ends. Nerve and muscle disorders are related and require a similar test when trying to discover the root problem of pain. During the EMG/NCV test a patient can expect to have electrodes connected to the skin at sections where the intervals indicate problems. A painless electric current is sent through these nerves and the impact of the passage is recorded. Any muscle weakness or problems will be detected as a result.
Dr. Cherry Ostrager may offer a special brace for the wrist that can help secure the wrist during day-to-day activities, thus mitigating any compromised movement leading to the problems. However, in extreme cases, there are additional treatment options that Dr. Ostrager may recommend including steroid injections such as corticosteroids. Sometimes, Dr. Ostrager may recommend seeing a specialist who may discuss surgical options for the most extreme cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
